From April 1, 2009 through August 31, 2009, Wilderness Systems (a Confluence Watersports company) will roll out a brand new program designed to support local organizations, introduce more people to paddling and establish a platform for a long-term sustainability initiative. The program is called “Paddle It Forward.”"Paddle It Forward” is a simple concept in which everyone gives a little, and receives a lot. Donate your used hard-shell kayak or canoe to any 501(c)(3), outdoor or environmental educational organization and bring the proof of donation to a participating Confluence dealer. With this proof of donation, you will receive nearly 20-percent off the cost of a new kayak or canoe.

Participating local retailers will give an immediate 10-percent discount off the price of a new Wilderness Systems, Dagger, Perception or Wave Sport kayak, or a Mad River Canoe. A mail-in rebate to Confluence will garner an additional, manufacturer-sponsored, 10-percent discount off the net purchase price.

“‘This program engages the whole paddling community in supporting local charities and schools that may otherwise be seeing a dip in donations right now,” said Sue Rechner, CEO of Confluence Watersports. “It offers us a unique opportunity to support the re-use of boats and directly influence the growth of the sport at the local level. We’re very excited for the community-wide charitable potential; and we also believe consumers and our dealer partners will benefit. It as a winning proposition for everyone.”

Confluence has an unyielding commitment to encouraging a sustainable participation in all forms of paddling. “Paddle It Forward” can be a major proponent for this initiative, all while supporting the charitable efforts of local and regional not-for-profits.

To participate in the “Paddle It Forward” program, please contact your local specialty retailer.

The initial offering of SlideTrax accessories for the 2009 Tarpon and Tarpon Angler series has been announced. The SlideTrax rails will be adding more accessories throughout the year, so check back.

** Pricing and specs are pre-release and are subject to change.

> SlideTrax Dashboard - $74.99 MSRP

Base platform mounts across the legs and offers a wide variety of potential accessory configurations, including fishing rod mounts, GPS, fish finders, and more. Unit comes predrilled with holes that accommodate scotty rod bases, and can be easily drilled to mount custom accessories. Slotted edges on both ends accommodate varying kayak width and allow adjustment to desired position on SlideTrax rails. Simple attachment to SlideTrax rails via base plates and hex head screws (included).

Surface Dimensions: 4 ½” x 23 1/2″

SlideTrax Dashboard

> SlideTrax Sideboard - $31.99 MSRP

Flat mounting platform attaches to SlideTrax rails on one side of the hull and is ideal for fish finders and rod holders. A preferred option for paddling anglers that do not want obstructions across their legs. Can also be used in conjunction with the SlideTrax dashboard to secure an array of accessories virtually anywhere on the SlideTrax unit. Sideboard is easily drilled for mounting accessories of choice.

Surface Dimensions: 4 ½” x 10″

> SlideTrax Transducer Deployment Arm (TDA) $21.99 MSRP

Designed to eliminate the frustration of properly deploying the transducer on a fish finder, the TDA makes it easy when used in conjunction with the SlideTrax Sideboard. In addition, the transducer can also be easily pulled out of the water when not in use. The TDA consists of a mounting base for attachment to the Sideboard with a swivel arm for attachment of the transducer that is simply rotated into place below the surface of the water or stowed safely on deck.

Sideboard with TDA attachment

We’ve received a number of questions on the new SlideTrax accessory rails available on the 2009 Tarpons. The product development team has released an official update of when and what you can expect to be available.

>> There are several development projects underway for accessories that exploit the modular capability of the Wilderness Systems SlideTrax system on our Tarpon series.

All accessories, in keeping with the design premise of the SlideTrax system will require no permanent modification to your kayak and will attach via the SlideTrax rail. They will be adjustable, repositionable, and removable, all via the same attachment system provided for the tie downs that come standard on the Tarpons.

Initial offering is scheduled to include a side-to-side Dashboard, providing a mounting surface for multiple preferred fishing accessories such as rod mounts, fish finder mounts, GPS mounts, etc. The Dashboard will be predrilled to provide easy accessory attachment and also easily drilled to accommodate any custom accessories you might have a need for. The Dashboard will be able to be slide forward or back to facilitate fishing or paddling.

A complementing accessory to the dashboard will be a Sideboard that mounts to one track, either on your right or left and is sized to mount a fishing rod holder and fish finder mount. The Sideboard will be accompanied by an optional modular transducer extension arm that will allow you to submerge the transducer off the side of your kayak when desired and retrieve it easily to minimize drag when paddling.

Like the Dashboard, the Sideboard will be easily installed, moved, and detached via the SlideTrax system, again requiring no modification to your kayak. The Transducer Arm can be attached to either the Sideboard or the Dashboard.

These SlideTrax accessories are currently in the quality assurance and field testing phase. We expect to begin delivery of these accessories in early spring, 2009.

We expect to expand the offerings for the SlideTrax system with additional predrilled mounting platforms that will easily accommodate either Scotty or RamMount rod holder bases or provide a flat mounting surface for any accessories you choose to custom outfit your boat. We anticipate these universal mounting platforms to be available in several sizes to maximize use of the SlideTrax system and will accommodate an array of accessories from cup holders to rod and paddle holders, and more.

Paddlers are encouraged to offer ideas for helpful accessories that they’d like to see for the SlideTrax. We monitor our blogs constantly and welcome any insight, feedback or inspiration you care to provide.

- Wilderness Systems Product Development Team

For the gear-obsessed and the neophyte alike, it is the culmination of an eleven-month wait to gather information on just about every boat on the market. The venerable editors of Canoe & Kayak also use this issue to announce the list of “Chosen Ones,” their choices for the best boats of the year.

Wilderness Systems is very proud to have the carbon/Kevlar Zephyr 155 ST Limited Edition selected as the “Chosen One” in the touring kayak category. “This boat has been a labor of love; and we’re extremely honored that it’s been named a ‘Chosen One’ by Canoe & Kayak,” said Sue Rechner, CEO of Confluence Watersports. “With the Zephyr 155 ST, we wanted to take performance and material usage to the next level. I credit Bob McDonough and Louis Rondeau, the main architects of the carbon Zephyr, for not only taking a concept and turning it into an incredible kayak to paddle; but also for creating what we humbly believe is one of the most beautiful boats around.”

The ultimate all-around sit on top kayak gets a major redesign for the 2009 season. We’ve painstakingly overhauled every detail for improved performance, comfort, and rigging capability. We’ve even revolutionized the scupper tube design through a new patent-pending process for unmatched water tightness.

The all-new Tarpon offers improved performance by enhancing the bow lift for gliding through the surf and significantly increased tankwell size for more storage. Raised floors offer an even drier ride in the seating area. The real headliner, though, is the improvement of the total paddling experience made possible by a series of outfitting and deck innovations.
